The Vatsala Devi Temple is located just in front of the palace, beside the king’s monument, and next to the Taleju Bell. This Shikhara-style temple is entirely made of sandstone and stands on a three-stage plinth, comparable to Patan’s Krishna temple. Vatsala Devi, a form of the goddess Durga, is honored here.In 1696 A.D., King Jitamitra Malla constructed the temple. However, the current edifice was built by King Bhupatindra Malla and originates from the late 17th or early 18th century. Dhunge dhara is a water spout behind the temple, and the Chayslin Mandap is next to it.

The Vatsala temple built by King Jitamitra Malla was damaged in the year’s earthquake and is now merely a red-floor temple, while the remaining two temples are still present. These three Vatsaladevi temples are known as “Yantra Vatsala,” “Kalash Vatsala,” and “Dance Vatsala,” respectively. Vatsaladevi assumed the guise of MATA DURGA (PARBATI) in order to unite women and Lord Yaksheshwar (Pashupatinath of Bhaktapur). The strength of the goddess inside a temple can be determined by looking at the temple’s form. This temple’s second floor includes four directions, eight miniature temples on each corner, and nine temples in the center.Indrayani is in the North, Barahi is in the West, Bhadrakali is in the South, and Mahakali is in the East, with a Mahakali statue in the east and Khetrapal Bhairav at the four corners. It is apparent from this that this temple houses a great deity.
