Thimi is the ideal place to get away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The casual atmosphere and cultural diversity of the area are captivating. Groups of attractive aged Newari men, all clad in Daura Suruwal and Bhadgaunle or Dhaka Topi, the traditional Nepali clothing, are seated on the mud-strewn floor in front of the dwellings. The town is a large producer of pottery and masks. With a population of nearly 84,000 people, the city is filled with Newari culture and traditions. Thimi is elevated and one must climb up the valley in order to reach the city. The city was originally known as Madhyapur which translates it to ‘middle place’ which is now more often used than Thimi.
In terms of excursions and tourism, Thimi is almost undiscovered; you’ll be lucky to meet another traveler there. The road to Thimi is parallel to the Bhaktapur highway, making it accessible by public transportation. Taking a bus back to Thimi or Bhaktapur will require waving one down outside the main gates.
