Mahashivaratri-Sila Chare

Mahashivaratri (Sila Chare- ShilaChare) means “Greatest Night of Shiva” in Sanskrit. In both Nepal and India, it is one of the most important Hindu celebrations. Shivaratri(Mahashivaratri (Sila Chare- ShilaChare)) is said to commemorate the day when Lord Shiva saved the world by drinking poison from the ocean at the Samudra Manthan. Lord Shiva is also known as Neelkanth because of the poison that was stored in his throat, turning it blue (blue throat).Many people commemorate the event by staying up all night singing Lord Shiva’s name alongside a pyre. Others fast for the full day and pay their respects to Lord Shiva at adjacent temples. 

In a year, there are 24 Shivaratris, with Sila Chahre being the Maha Shivaratri. On this day, Lord Shiva is honored. On this day, individuals bathe and fast. People who stay awake all night are successful in all of their endeavors.
