During the time of King Jagat Prakash Malla this temple was constructed. The creation of this Wakupati Narayan is the subject of a legend.

There is a story on  the  Wakupati Narayan Temple .Lord Changu Narayan was a devotee of a farmer. He used to go to Changu Village on a daily basis. Due to his busy schedule, he was unable to meet Lord Changu Narayan  one day while harvesting paddy.A fter a day, he went home with a huge load of paddy, and Lord Changu Narayan appeared inside the paddy. In 1667, he constructed a two-storey elegant temple on the current Wakupati Narayan Temple. Because he is sitting on a paddy load, this Narayan is known as Wakupati Narayan. In Nepalbhasa “Wa” signifies “Paddy” and “Ku” indicates “Storage”Pati” is a Hindi word that signifies “owner.” Wakupati Narayan is known as Narayan because he owns a paddy burden. As a result, the practice of offering new paddy to this Narayan has not changed since the introduction of new paddy.

Four stone pillars are erected in front of the temple, one of which is on the ground, on top of pillar Garuda (a bird creature from Hindu mythology that has a mix of eagle and human features) placed. The only way to get so many Garuda  in front of a Narayan temple is to do it this way.
