Buddhist Vihars and Bahis (Buddhist Monasteries and Courtyards) In Bhaktapur

The City of Bhaktapur is home to Buddhist monasteries, vihars, or "hidden" temples. Since the medieval times, they have served as religious sanctities as well as historical examples of Buddhist art and architecture in this once ancient Nepali city.

Bhaktapur is also a Buddhist city. Baha and Bahis can be found in almost every neighborhood in town. Although Udhyotak Vihar and the VichhuniSangha at Chamhasimha no longer exist, they were built during the Lichchhavi era. It was only a few days ago that the ruins of the Vihars were discovered in the Jhaukhel area. Whatever the case may be, the town’s existing Vihars appear to have thrived during the Malla period.
